Duhumbi Heritage Fair
About Duhumbi Heritage Fair
There are some places where you arrive as a traveller and slowly leave feeling connected to the people who welcomed you.
The Duhumbi Heritage Fair in Chug Valley is one of those experiences.
Hosted by the Monpa community of Arunachal Pradesh, the fair is less about watching performances from a distance and more about stepping into the everyday rhythm of the village itself.
Inspired by the spirit of Tawang Torgya, the villagers intentionally keep the performances closer to the people instead of building large elevated stages.
And because of that, the entire experience feels intimate and personal.
You do not feel separated from the celebrations. You feel part of them.
Taking place in the beautiful Chug Valley during October, the fair brings together culture, food, community traditions, local crafts, nature experiences, and village life in a way that feels immersive rather than performative.
With us, this journey is not only about attending the fair. It is about experiencing Chug slowly and meaningfully.
You can spend time learning the traditional process of Mon Shugu paper making from local women artisans, participate in natural dye workshops using locally foraged plants and herbs, walk through the village with community members, and experience the warmth of Monpa hospitality firsthand.
The local games become some of the most memorable moments of the fair.
What begins with people casually watching usually turns into everyone participating together.
Archery, tug of war, and traditional games slowly dissolve the distance between visitors and locals.
By the end of the day, conversations happen naturally over food, local drinks, and shared laughter.
The fair also offers opportunities for birdwatching, village walks, and museum visits through
the valley.
During this time of the year, Chug becomes even more beautiful with cosmos flowers spread across the landscape.
Interesting fact: Cosmos flowers are locally referred to as “I love you” flower.
The atmosphere feels festive without losing the quietness and charm of the village itself.
Food is another important part of the experience.
At the heart of it is Damu’s Heritage Dine, a community-led initiative run by women from the village.
Set in a restored traditional Monpa home, this space celebrates local ingredients, forgotten recipes, heirloom grains, and the culinary traditions of the valley.
The experience goes far beyond dining. It becomes a way to understand the relationship between food, landscape, and culture in Chug.
Throughout the fair, you will also find seasonal fruits like kiwi and persimmon, locally made jams, handmade crafts, and products made from Mon Shugu paper, creating opportunities to directly support local artisans and self help groups.
What makes the Duhumbi Heritage Fair stand out even more is the community’s effort to keep it plastic free and rooted in sustainability.
In a time where many festivals are becoming larger and louder, Chug has chosen to create something slower, more mindful, and deeply community driven.
For us, this is not simply a festival visit.
It is an invitation to experience a village closely, to participate instead of just observe, and to spend a few days surrounded by stories, people, food, landscapes, and traditions that still feel genuinely connected to the land they come from.
The Duhumbi Heritage Fair usually takes place during the first half of October in Chug Valley, Arunachal Pradesh.
Dates for this year will be updated soon.
